Manchester City to extent Frank Lampard Contract

Manchester City are reportedly keen on extending the loan spell of midfielder Frank Lampard especially to cope with the loss of Yaya Touré during the months of January and early February.

The Ivory Coast international will be heading out to the Africa Cup of Nations, thus weakening the team quite drastically.Even though Toure has not been at his best this campaign, he has produced moments of brilliance that have resulted in victories against the likes of Aston Villa. Lampard has had a stop start campaign with City due to injuries. Despite this, he has contributed immensely especially with goals against his former club Chelsea at the start.

Lampard is right now contracted only until January after which he will be returning to his parent club, New York City FC. The MLS outfit will be taking part in their debut MLS campaign from the 2015 season. Lampard is one of the high-profile names, along with David Villa, to sign for the club in the summer. However, since the MLS campaign does not begin until the middle of March, Lampard could theoretically extend the loan spell until the end of this campaign. The English campaign concludes in the first few weeks of May.

“We will do what is best for the team and the player. We must talk about a lot of things but it is not impossible for him to stay here. It is an issue that we will see further down the line. We will see what happens in January and we have two or three months to decide,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini a few months ago when asked about the possibility of Lampard staying beyond the January. Lampard has primarily featured as a substitute late in the matches when City are in need of a goal. He has scored two in the Premier League.
